"Meditation is the dissolution of thoughts in Eternal awareness or Pure consciousness without objectification, knowing without thinking, merging finitude in infinity."-- Swami Sivananda
Whew! What does that sound like in regular language?
In your personal growth journey, you will no doubt come into contact with the concept of Meditation and Yoga.
What is meditation in relation to relaxation?
Because meditation is a relaxation technique that is getting more and more widely accepted in the West, many self growth individuals are incorporating it into their stress reduction methods. .
There are those of us however who still view meditation as a somewhat suspect concept.
Although personal growth gurus such as
Deepak Chopra andWayne Dyer
have helped demystify this self improvement tool, many people still think of it as some esoteric eastern practice.
Others might not even be sure if it interferes with conventional religious practices.
Suffice it to say that most of the central religious figures such as Jesus, Buddha or Mohammed have all been quoted to have "meditated" at some point or other.
What might be of interest to note is that prayer is a form of meditation.
So, How do you get started with your meditation practice?
To most people, meditation conjures images of some eastern monk seated in some seemingly impossible yoga position chanting "ohm" for hours upon hours.
The reality is, meditation is a practice that normal, everyday people receive benefits from all the time.
Think of an aerobics teacher, for example. He/she might spend 5 to 6 hours a day exercising. Teaching. It's their life work.
They are healthy. Fit. Awesome bodies (Well, most of the time anyway.
Yet many people who exercise an hour a day regularly can be just as healthy, fit and energized!
The key is to realize that the intention of meditation is to simply calm your mind and have inner peace.
In which case if you already have all the calm and inner peace you could ever ask for, you already meditate, you just don't call it that.
