Positive thinking is now so cliché it has become an easy target for comical humor. Somebody once quipped that some people are so positive that that they are positively broke.
Jokes aside though, what role does a positive attitude play in creating a successful life? Let us explore............
Famed metaphysics teacher Norman Vincent Peale, in his book If You Think You Can You Can states:
"Believe you can. Believe it is possible to solve your problem. Tremendous things happen to the believer. So believe the answer will come. It will."
Thinking positive does not imply passive optimism. In fact, a truly positive thinker recognizes the difficulties and obstacles that life inevitably presents, and respects them for what they are.
As a positive thinker however, you do not let life's challenges turn you into a seeming defeated soul. For example, someone who is not taking any action to change their current situation cannot claim to be a positive thinker. This is because true positive thinkers are inspired, active, alive and buzzing!
What Role Does Belief Play?
Going back to the famed New Thought author, Norman Vincent Peale, in another of his classic books, The Power of Positive Thinking, he states:
"..... change your mental habits to belief instead of disbelief. Learn to expect, not to doubt. In so doing, you bring everything into the realm of possibilities. .......... Our belief at the beginning of a doubtful undertaking is the one thing (now get that -- is the one thing) that insures the successful outcome of your venture. To learn to believe is of primary importance. It is the basic factor of succeeding in any undertaking. When you expect the best, you release a magnetic force in your mind which by a law of attraction tends to bring the best to you."
Positive Thoughts and Stress Management
Researchers are now finding a strong link between our daily attitude - as determined by our thoughts - with how happy or depressed people can be.
Optimistic people generally tend to have a more positive outlook to life. Positive thinkers do not tend to have an entitlement mentality, therefore tough challenges are met with a winner's attitude.
How to Maintain a Positive Thinking Focus
Maintaining an attitude of gratitude. You can always find somethingto be grateful for in your life, no matter how tough it seems.
You cannot be truly grateful and not feel good. Try it!
Eliminating negative self talk. This one is a happiness killer. Remember, most negative self talk is so automatic we aren't even conscious of it.
Having a healthy self esteem. This helps us not take things too personally, but instead see life's lessons from a healthy perspective. We lose the victim's mentality and acquire a victor's mentality.
Visualizing your life as you desire it, not as it is.
Living a purposeful and passionate life. No matter what you do, if you do what you love to do, you can't help but be happy.
Contributing in a positive way. Giving always energizes us. Use contribution as a way to empathize with others, not to ignore your problems, but as a way to connect deeper with the reality of it. It is impressive for example, the number of people that get involved with, eg. cancer activism after losing a family member to it.
The growing interest in self improvement
is a good indication that more and more people are waking up to the realization that our mental attitude is a huge factor in our general state of happiness and fulfillment.
